Naturalization   [Citizenship]

There are 9 requirements for an applicant to consider when applying for United States citizenship or naturalization. The person must:

  1. be a lawful permanent resident
  2. be at least 18 years of age
  3. have good moral character, keeping in mind certain bars to naturalization
  4. be able to have a fairly simple conversation in English
  5. be able to pass a test on United States history and government
  6. have been residing in the United States for at least the last 5 years
  7. have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the 5 years period
  8. not disrupted their continuous residence in the United States for any of the last five years
  9. believe in the principles of the United States Constitution and take an oath of loyalty to the United States, administered by USCIS or a court in a naturalization ceremony.

Each of these requirements has important exceptions that an experienced immigration practitioner can counsel you on.

If any of the following situations apply, you should seek the advice of an expert in immigration law before applying for naturalization.
